On ergonomic use of this site

I hope you are nice and comfortable on a suitable chair; something like a saddle chair or swiss exercise ball might be your style. Ahhh, that's it, nice and relaxed. Or maybe you prefer working standing up with the keyboard and monitor up nice and high, I have often found that one works well for the legs. Ahhh...

I recommend 1024x768 display resolution for viewing this site. The (sometimes very large) exported Unified Modelling Language (UML)TM images I use on this site are deliberately tuned for that size. If you are using only 800x600 resolution you will have trouble viewing this site.

You SHOULD (if you are visual) view this on a large monitor (something like 19" is nice) or projected onto a wall with a data projector. It is the 21st century, and you SHOULD know by now that little screens damage your eyes and hurt your body. How much are your eyes and nervous system worth, and how much is a decent computer monitor worth ? That one is a "no brainer". So if you are still using a very small monitor you maybe have no brain.

Fonts too small ? Try CTRL+ ! I will be tuning the style of this site using Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to get consistency across browsers, so please report excessively small font sizes to css@webel.com.au.

You SHOULD not have to work on a damaging QWERTY keyboard, either, in the 21st century. You SHOULD know by now that QWERTY keyboards are primitive, stupid, and very dangerous. You SHOULD be using at least an ergonomic QWERTY with split keyboard to prevent rotational stress that propagates up your arms to damage your shoulders and neck, or preferrably something intelligent like the DatahandTM system. (For an excellent presentation on the history and future of computer interaction see the exhibitions at the absolutely fabulous Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Australia.)

Or best of all you could soon be using an accelerometer-based Human-Computer-Interaction (HCI) system (like I am developing) that enables you to control computers by just waving your hands or feet of twiddling your fingers in the air, or you could use an accelerometer chip on your nose or eyelid to type by just nodding or blinking !

Are you working on a pissy little laptop with a cramped keyboard and piddle screen ? Good bloody luck to you. Why not just use your mobile phone keyboard and a toothpick for all your typing and web surfing ?

In any case, if it is hurting you, stop it: go outside, have a swim, do some yoga, go to the gym, do some Pilates or BodyPumpTM, and get a life beyond the screen. In fact if it is hurting you already it is too late; you SHOULD be taking breaks often enough to prevent such stress. If you have been working for 48 hours and it is no longer hurting it is because you are now NUMB and your nervous system is shutting down.

PS: get an infrared mouse rather than a mechanical mouse, and only use it when you have to.
