On 30 Jun 2007 HERA shut down and DESY celebrated 15 years of groundbreaking science

On Sat Jun 30 23:59:55 2007 the Hadron Elektron Ring Anlage (HERA) at Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) made its final run. I was delighted to be present in Hamburg, Germany at the celebration on Fri 29 Jun 2009, and to be in the control room that evening to see HERA in operation one last time. Congratulations to all at DESY and to all international collaborators on your achievements, and a special thanks to the -MPY- accelerator physics group for many enjoyable years working together.

HERA particle accelerator: electron Beam Loss Monitor lifetime disruption plots

The rate of beam loss monitor events from  lo  to  hi  is given as a coloured area plot over:

  • x-axis: time.
  • y-axis (lower): the index of the Electron Beam Loss Monitor (BLME) around the HERA electron storage ring.
  • y-axis (upper): the electron beam current.

Disruptions of the electron beam lifetime by charged macroparticles are revealed in the plots as slanted "hot" rate streaks. The novel plot strategy confirmed the existence, nature, scale and frequecny of the suspected disruptions.
