Like most science students in the 1980s, I used FORTRAN often on a number of projects, not least because so many important numerical and legacy libraries were only available in FORTRAN. However, with the advent of symbolic algebra I soon discovered that one does well to let a computer and a symbolic algebra tool generate compilable, error-free, efficient FORTRAN (or any other desired low-level language) for you.
